About This Windmill
Built in the 1790s, Higgins Windmill is one of the few remaining historic mills on Cape Cod. Restored and preserved by the town, it stands as a reminder of early Cape Cod industry and craftsmanship. This drone flight highlights its structure, location, and the natural landscape that surrounds it.
The Old Higgins Farm Windmill, was originally located on Route 6A and Ellis Landing, in Brewster, MA.
Built in 1795, the “smock” style is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A Smock windmill has a sloped, weather-boarded tower and a top cap that rotates to bring the sails into the wind.
It was moved closer to Cape Cod Bay because it’s sails once scared the
horses as they traveled on old 6A.
Resting in its current location at Drummer Boy Park, the non-functioning windmill was restored in July 1976.
The octagonal, 20′ base supports a revolving cap, constructed with curved timbers as in a hull of a ship.
The windmill last ground grain in the early 1900’s and has been meticulously preserved.
A unique character of this mill are the secret scrimshaw carvings, as were
found on ships created by sailors.
Donated to the Brewster Historical Society, the windmill sits in an open field, is visible from the road and easily accessible to the public.
